An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I would never have had the courage or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
